We sell rotary engines every month — 13B-REW twin turbos for FD RX-7s, Renesis units for RX-8s — and we sell every single one AS-IS. So does every honest importer in the country. If you're shopping rotaries and a seller offers a used one "with warranty," this article explains why you should read the fine print twice. Consider it the buyer's guide we wish everyone got before their first rotary.
A piston engine's rings can last 300,000 miles. A rotary's apex seals — the strips sealing each rotor face against the housing — are a wear item on a schedule, and their remaining life in a used engine is fundamentally unknowable from the outside. A rotary can pass a compression check on Tuesday and let a seal go in six months through no fault of the seller, the buyer or the engine. That's not a defect; it's the architecture. It's also why rotaries are rebuilt as routine maintenance in a way K24s never are.
Rotary-specific compression numbers. A standard gauge won't do it — rotary testing reads all three faces of each rotor per revolution. Ask for the three-face numbers per rotor, not a thumbs-up.
Cold-start behavior. A healthy rotary lights off without drama. Long cranking when cold is the classic tell of tired seals.
History honesty. Auction grade, mileage documentation, and photos of the actual unit — turbos, oil metering lines and harness visible. Every 13B we list is photographed as the exact engine that ships.
Rotaries reward owners who respect the platform: never shut one off cold-started (flooding a cold rotary is the #1 novice kill), keep the oil metering pump healthy or premix religiously if it's been deleted, watch coolant temps like a hawk on turbo cars, and treat ignition components as consumables. Do that and a good 13B is one of the most charismatic engines ever made. Skip it and no warranty in the world would have saved you — which is the honest reason AS-IS exists.
AS-IS means we can't warranty a wear item we can't see inside. It does not mean sight-unseen gambling: you still get auction documentation, rotary compression results, and actual-unit photos before you pay, plus straight answers on the phone — (469) 570-4113. If a unit tests weak, we don't list it as a runner. We'd rather lose the sale.
