5 Things to Check Before Buying a Used JDM Engine

5 Things to Check Before Buying a Used JDM Engine

You found a JDM engine that fits your budget and your build. Now the most important question: is it actually good? The used JDM market has more than its share of misrepresented units, inflated mileage claims, and engines that have been "cleaned up" to hide problems. Here's how to protect yourself before you buy.

1. Demand Real Photos of the Actual Unit

This is the single biggest red flag in the industry. Many dealers list engines with stock photos or blurry, low-res images that could be of any engine. Before purchasing, ask for clear, high-resolution photos of the specific engine you're buying, including the engine block, head, oil cap area, and any accessible internals. If a dealer can't or won't provide these, walk away.

2. Ask for a Compression Test Result

A compression test is the most reliable quick check of an engine's internal health. Each cylinder should read within 10% of the others, and all should be within the manufacturer's specified range. Low or uneven compression readings are a red flag for worn rings, damaged valves, or a compromised head gasket. A reputable dealer will compression test every engine before selling it and will share the results with you.

3. Verify the Serial Number

Every JDM engine has a stamped serial number on the block. Ask the dealer to provide it and cross-reference it against the photos. This confirms the engine in the photos is the one being shipped, and it gives you a traceable record in case of a warranty claim.

4. Check the Mileage Claim Against Japan's Shaken System

Japan's mandatory vehicle inspection program (Shaken) requires vehicles to meet strict safety and emissions standards every two years. Because of the cost, most Japanese owners sell or scrap their vehicles before they accumulate high mileage. This is what drives the genuine low-mileage JDM market. Most authentic JDM engines will fall between 30,000 and 65,000 miles. Be skeptical of claims below 20,000 miles without strong documentation.

5. Understand What the Warranty Actually Covers

A 30-day warranty is standard in the industry and should cover internal engine components. Read the fine print carefully — some dealers exclude head gaskets, external parts, or anything performance-related. Make sure the warranty process is clearly spelled out: who pays return shipping, what triggers a replacement vs. a refund, and how long the process takes.

6. Check Reviews Across Multiple Platforms

Google, eBay, and Trustpilot are all worth checking. A dealer with thousands of completed transactions on eBay has a verifiable track record that's hard to fake. Look for consistent patterns in complaints, not just the overall star rating.
