When it comes to Honda engine swaps, two families dominate the conversation: the B-series and the K-series. Both are legendary in the JDM and tuner communities, but they serve very different purposes. Here's a breakdown to help you decide which is right for your build.
The B-series (B16, B18, B20) has been the go-to Honda engine swap for over three decades. It's lightweight, proven, and there's an enormous aftermarket ecosystem around it.
The K-series (K20, K24) is Honda's more modern DOHC i-VTEC family, found in the RSX, Civic Si, and Accord. It produces more power, has better torque across the rev range, and is the current foundation of most serious Honda builds.
Choose the B-series if you have an older EG/EK/DA chassis, want a simpler bolt-in swap, are on a tighter budget, or prefer the lighter weight for a track or autocross car.
Choose the K-series if you have a DC5, EP3, or newer chassis, want more power from the factory, plan to boost or build the motor seriously, or need more low-end torque for a heavier vehicle or daily driver.
In both cases, the JDM versions of these engines often outperform their USDM counterparts right out of the box, thanks to higher compression ratios and different tuning maps suited to Japan's higher-octane fuel. At JDM Alliance LLC, we stock both B-series and K-series engines with real photos and compression test results so you know exactly what you're getting. View our Honda engine inventory here.
