EJ255 vs EJ257 vs EJ253
The turbo pair are close relatives with a real difference. The EJ255 (WRX, Forester XT, Legacy GT) uses a semi-closed deck block, 8.4:1 compression and a VF-series turbo, making roughly 224–265 hp. The EJ257 (STI) uses the same displacement with a stronger semi-closed deck, different heads and the VF turbo family tuned for 300+ hp. The EJ257 is worth the premium if you plan to make power; the EJ255 is the sensible replacement if you are putting a stock WRX back on the road.
The naturally aspirated EJ251 / EJ253 from the Forester, Legacy and Outback runs 10.0:1 compression and roughly 165–173 hp. These are the ones failing on head gaskets across the US — the single most common Subaru replacement we ship.
One warning worth stating plainly: EJ25 engines are known for ringland failure under boost with poor tuning or bad fuel. Whatever you buy, tune it properly and do not run pump 87.

Engines are sold as a long block with the accessories shown in the listing photos. Turbo, harness, ECU and transmission are included only where the listing states it. Every unit is compression tested and its serial number is recorded against the listing — we send you photos and the serial before it ships, and you approve before it leaves the warehouse.
