Genuine Japanese-domestic-market D15B 1.5L SOHC 3-stage VTEC inline-four, imported directly from Japan by JDM Alliance. The 3-stage D15B is the most capable of the D15 family and was never sold in the United States — it makes roughly 130 PS from 1.5 litres while still returning lean-burn economy, which is why it remains a popular JDM-only upgrade over a non-VTEC D-series. How 3-stage VTEC works
Most VTEC heads have two modes. This one has three, and it uses two separate solenoids to get there:

• Stage 1 — lean burn (low rpm, light load): one intake valve stays nearly closed, swirling the charge so the engine can run a very lean mixture. This is the economy mode.
• Stage 2 — 16-valve (mid rpm): both intake valves open on the mild cam lobes for normal driving.
• Stage 3 — full VTEC (high rpm): the rocker arms lock onto the aggressive third lobe for peak power.

What you'll need to run all three stages

• A 3-stage ECU. A U.S.-market Civic ECU cannot drive two VTEC solenoids. On a standard ECU the engine will start and run, but you'll lose lean-burn and you may set a check-engine light for the unused solenoid circuit.
• The matching engine harness, or your harness modified to feed the second solenoid and its oil-pressure switch.
• The JDM intake manifold and throttle body (included here) — the 3-stage head's port layout differs from the U.S. D15.

Plenty of people run this engine on a standard OBD2 setup and are happy with it. Just go in knowing that without the correct ECU and wiring you're buying a strong D15 rather than a working 3-stage.

Not to be confused with

• D15Z1 (VTEC-E) — lean-burn only, no high-rpm stage.
• D15B7 — the U.S. non-VTEC 1.5.
• D15B single-cam VTEC — also badged D15B in Japan but a two-stage head. Check for the second solenoid on the head if you're comparing listings elsewhere.
