What 3-stage VTEC means
The JDM 3-stage D15B is a genuinely different engine from the single-cam D-series sold in the United States. It runs three distinct valve profiles — 12-valve economy, 16-valve normal, and a high-lift VTEC stage — rather than the two-stage arrangement most D-series use. That's why it's bought as an upgrade rather than a like-for-like replacement.
