7-bolt vs 6-bolt, and Evo generations

The first thing to establish is bolt count. The 6-bolt 4G63 (1G DSM, Galant VR-4, Evo I–III) has six bolts holding the flywheel to the crank and is the stronger, more sought-after bottom end. The 7-bolt (2G DSM and Evo IV onward) has a known crank walk risk in early US units — though the JDM Evo blocks from Evo VII onward are a different quality of casting and are not the same risk profile as a 1995 Eclipse.

Across Evo generations: Evo IV–VI use the TD05 turbo family and roughly 276 hp (the Japanese gentleman's agreement figure — real output was often higher). Evo VII–IX add revisions to the head and, on the Evo IX, MIVEC variable valve timing on the intake. The Evo IX 4G63 with MIVEC is the most capable factory version.

Engines are sold as a long block with the accessories shown in the listing photos. Turbo, manifold, harness, ECU and transmission are included only where the listing states it — check the photos, they are of the actual unit. Every engine is compression tested and its serial number is recorded against the listing; we send you photos and the serial before it ships, and you approve before it leaves the warehouse.
