K20A vs K20A2 vs K20A3 vs K20Z

The variants are not interchangeable in spec. The JDM K20A from the DC5 Type R and EP3 Type R is the one builders want — 11.5:1 compression, PRC or PRB head, roughly 215–220 hp from the factory and the most aggressive VTEC cam profile of the family. The K20A2 is the US RSX Type-S engine, very close to the JDM Type R but with a slightly milder tune. The K20A3 is the economy version from the base RSX and Civic Si — SOHC-style VTEC on the intake side only, lower compression, and not a performance starting point. The K20Z1/Z3 are the later 2005-onward revisions with an improved intake manifold and a stronger bottom end.

If you are chasing power, buy the head. A JDM K20A Type R short block and head is worth the premium over a K20A3 every single time.

What you receive

Engines are sold as a long block with the accessories shown in the listing photos. You will need to reuse your existing wiring, ECU and intake unless the listing states otherwise. Every unit is compression tested and its serial number is recorded against the listing — we send you photos and the serial before it ships, and you approve before it leaves the warehouse.

Replacement engines carry a start-up warranty of up to 90 days; performance variants carry 30 days. Take local pickup at our Dallas, TX warehouse at 10203 Corkwood Rd, or crated freight anywhere in the lower 48.
