The naturally aspirated EJ253 covers the Legacy, Outback, Forester and Impreza 2.5i models of the 2000s, while the turbocharged EJ255 serves the 2006+ WRX, Forester XT and Legacy GT (the STI's EJ257 is a close cousin). You transfer or source separately: intake manifold, exhaust, wiring harness, ECU, sensors and accessories plus mounting hardware. The engine in the photos is the actual unit you receive, and we confirm the serial with you before it ships.
Every EJ25 is compression-tested, its auction grade is documented, and it is photographed as the actual unit. Naturally aspirated replacement EJ25 engines carry our 90-day start-up warranty; turbocharged EJ255 performance units carry a 30-day warranty plus a 30-day return window. The EJ25's reputation for head-gasket weep is real on the naturally aspirated engines, and the smart money reseals the engine while it's on the stand: multi-layer steel head gaskets, resurfaced heads if needed, plus valve cover, oil pan, rear main and cam seals, a fresh timing belt kit and water pump. It's a fraction of the labor cost of doing it in the car later. Fill with fresh oil and coolant, burp the cooling system properly (flat-fours trap air), have a certified mechanic handle the install — it's also a warranty condition — and change the oil again after the first 500 miles.
